How to Begin Youth Archery Training

There is no specific age for children to begin youth archery training. Some children can get ready for archery training at an early age under 10, while some take longer to discover their interest in bow hunt or archery. No matter what age they begin training on archery, parents should supervise them all the time till they become fully trained and acquire a professional certification.
There are different kinds of youth archery training in Cape Town such as:

•    After School Archery Training

•    Adult Archery Programs

•    Professional Archery Training

•    Scout Programs

•    Archery Training at Archery Clubs

Basic Necessities

You basically need things like a bow, arrows, and a target in order to begin the training. Additionally, you would need certain precautions like a quiver to hold the arrows, an arm guard to protect your arm against the string slap, and some finger or hand protection. Another major thing to take care of, especially for much younger children, is to use suction cup arrows rather than standard metal tip. This will help your youth get comfortable with aiming and shooting the bow much faster, so they can use a sharper arrow sooner.

When selecting the bow for your youth you would need to take the following factors into account:

•    Bow-length

•    Eye Dominance

•    Draw-length

•    Draw-width

These factors will vary from person and person and for a particular child these factors will keep changing with the age.

Choosing Your Youth Bow.

This is quite a daunting task to get the correct bow for your son or daughter starting archery.
Here are a couple of things to consider before even choosing the bow you want or need.

First off, what kind of archery is he or she going to be doing?
Is it just for fun, to compete in tournaments or hunting?

If he/she is going to be competing in archery tournaments you need to decide which competitions and class he/she will compete in. As every competition have their rules for the specific events and classes.
For instance if he/she is going to take part in the National Archery Schools Program then he/she will need the equipment specified in their rules and regulations.
Indoor or 3D tournaments have their own rules and regulations and you’ll need to comply with their rules.
My advice would be to contact your local pro archery shop.

For hunting, you first need to decide what kind of bow you want to hunt with: recurve, compound or crossbow?
Then what you want to spend? Your maximum budget price and then go from there.
You can easily find prices on the web or contact your local archery pro shop for assistance. You might even have to look at 2nd hand bows depending on your budget, you can often find great deals 2nd hand so don’t be discouraged just yet.

Archery Training Cape Town

Determining your draw length for a recurve bow when shooting with fingers.

Choosing the correct size bow suited for your needs and size is very important.
Any bow that is too short for your draw length will result in inconsistent shots and an uncomfortable body position.

On the other hand if a person’s draw length is to long it results in poor shooting form, inaccuracy and painful string slap on the forearm which isn’t really a problem when shooting recurve.

But when a recurve bow that’s too small is over drawn past its designed length it can cause the bow to break and even injure the shooter.

To get started measuring your draw you need a measuring tape, a pen or pencil and a rod or dowel of some kind longer than your arm.

Hold the one end of the rod softly at the base of your neck right above your chest bone while holding not stretching both arms to the front of the rod and mark as far as you can reach or ask someone to mark the place where your middle fingers touches the rod.

Take the measuring tape and measure from the tip that was at the base of your neck to the mark that was made.

This will be your draw length for a recurve bow when using your fingers to shoot.
Please don’t forget to convert your measurements in mm to inches.

Now you can accurately choose the correct bow size.
